Hand-turned on the Channapatna lathe and painted in the unmistakable Karnataka folk style; this little doll depicts a woman carrying a matka on her head — the daily ritual of fetching water that has shaped Indian village life for centuries. The red saree is sealed in vegetable dyes; the form is rounded and warm; the beeswax finish soft to the touch. A grounding little presence on a console or a shelf — and a heartfelt return to a familiar image.
