Description+
Hand-turned on the lathes of Channapatna, this sitting elephant wears a deep vermilion red over a creamy golden base — the duotone produced by layering vegetable dyes as the wood spins. The form is rounded and full, in the unmistakable folk vocabulary of Karnataka's lacquerware tradition. Sealed with beeswax for a soft sheen, it is meant to be touched as much as looked at. A grounding little presence on a console, a mantel or beside a brass diya.
