A ten-inch standing elephant; broad-backed enough to serve as a side perch for a plant; a brass lamp or a stack of books. Hand-turned and painted in the Channapatna folk tradition; the legs are finished in deep green and the ears in sunny yellow; with red folk-paint detailing across the body. Coloured with vegetable dyes and sealed with beeswax; the piece brings the gentle authority of the village elephant into a contemporary room. Substantial; warm; quietly auspicious.
